Danish group SUPERFLEX worked with local Brazilian farmers of the guarana berry to create, market, and commercially sell a energy drink after major corporations formed a monopoly and drove prices of the berry down, hurting the farmers financially.

ABOUT:
Artist APOLONIJA SUSTERSIC creates a functioning juice bar in a Luxembourg exhibition venue that was previously a fruit and vegetable stand. Apolonija was attempting to make a statement on the importance of respecting historical architecture’s past, and drawing attention to it’s future as a repurposed art space. The artist transformed the space into a cafĂ©/ juice bar, where people could relax and drink fresh orange juice.

SIMILARITIES/DIFFERENCES

SIMILARITIES:
-Both artists create a beverage to be consumed and enjoyed.
-Both artists are creating a project outside of their native country.
-Both artists are creating work to draw attention to a social issue.

DIFFERENCES:
-SUPERFLEX is an artist group, consisting of multiple members, APOLONIJA SUSTERSIC is an individual artist.
-SUPERFLEX is marketing their product commercially to financially benefit the farmers they are working with, APOLONIJA SUSTERSIC’S work is less concerned with monetary outcomes and more so with nostalgia.
-SUPERFLEX deals with issues of copyrights, trademarks and branding, while APOLONIJA SUSTERSIC deals more with fine art, architecture and creating a space.
